Powerful Women in Antigone and A Dollââ¬â¢s House Essay
The music group, Aqua, once sang in their song, ââ¬Å"Barbie Girl,â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world. Life in plastic, itââ¬â¢s fantastic.â⬠Aquaââ¬â¢s lyrics symbolize the role women had to play in the 18th century. Women were expected to perform like perfect human beings, and put a smile on their faces regardless of the situation. They were expected to follow the rules at all times and submit to men in an instance. Antigone, written by Sophocles, and A Dollââ¬â¢s House, written by Henrik Ibsen, demonstrate the interaction and roles with men and women during the 18th century. The main characters in both plays, Antigone in Antigone and Nora in A Dollââ¬â¢s House, show how women have struggled to find their place in the social order. They had to fight forâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Linden to leave the room when Helmer gets home because Helmer does not like seeing ââ¬Å"Womenââ¬â¢s work.â⬠Nora was forced to hide her personal posses sions in front of her husband. This shows how women were forced to alter their lifestyle to please their husbands. Nora had to go out of her way in order to make her husband satisfied. In Antigone, Ismene replies to Antigoneââ¬â¢s plan to bury her brother with a feminist remark: ââ¬Å"Remember we are women, weââ¬â¢re not born to contend with men. Then too, weââ¬â¢re underlings, ruled by much stronger hands, so we must submit to this...â⬠(Sophocles 18) Ismene clearly shows that she and Antigone cannot compete with men because men are physically and mentally stronger. This shows how Ismene and all other women thought they had to submit to the authority of the state and to man in order to live fruitfully in society. Antigone and Nora exhibit in many different instances how women had a very limited relationship with men. Antigone and Nora had the courage to possess one of the characteristics that many women during the 18th century failed to acquire: braveness. While struggling with the decision to go against a manââ¬â¢s orders, Antigone stands up to authority and does the morally just thing: ââ¬Å"But leave me to my own absurdity, leave me to suffer this- dreadful thing. Iââ¬â¢ll suffer nothing as great as death without glory.â⬠(Sophocles 19) This instance shows how Antigone was one of the few women of her era to face theShow MoreRelatedThe Strength and Courage of Women Exposed in A Dollââ¬â¢s House and Antigone1183 Words à |à 5 PagesHave you ever wondered what women were like before the liberation movement of the 1970s? In the plays Antigone, by Sophocles, and A Dollââ¬â¢s House, by Henrik Ibsen, women are represented as weak, underlings to men. However, both protagonists in the play, Antigone and Nora, show their strength and courage when they go against society. Antigone sho ws how strong she is when she goes against the Kingââ¬â¢s decree and buries her brother who is a traitor. How important was Lenin in enabling the communist government to survive war and rebellion in the years 1918-1922. The communist government survived war and rebellion because of a variety of key figures including Lenin. However to say that Lenin was important is speculative, there were many events that occurred which Lenin didnââ¬â¢t contribute to which helped the communist government survive. It is possible to think that Lenin was not important in enabling the communist government to survive war and rebellion because of the kronstadt revolt. This was a key event in which Lenin did not contribute and therefore unimportant. The kronstadt revolt occurred because sailors at the Kronstadt naval base had long been a source of radical dissent andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The most important example to show that Lenin was important in enabling the communist government to survive war rebellion, is the civil war. The Russian Civil War was to tear Russia apart for three years ââ¬â between 1918 and 1921. The civil war occurred because after November 1917, many groups had formed that opposed Leninââ¬â¢s Bolsheviks. These groups included monarchists, militarists, and, for a short time, foreign nations. Collectively, they were known as the Whites while the Bolsheviks were known as the Reds. Lenin imposed an iron grip on territory under the control of the Bolsheviks. The party had a secret police unit called the Cheka, which was set up by Lenin on 20th December 1917, it ruthless in hunting out possible opponents to Lenin. In many areas of Russia, where the Bolsheviks had control, the Cheka was judge, jury and executioner. Its power was massively extended after August 30th, 1918. War Communism was introduced by Lenin to combat the economic problems brought on by the civil war in Russia. Lenin was given much credit for this and was a key reason in why the Reds won the civil war. This is the important example because it clearly shows that Lenin had a major effect on the communist partyââ¬â¢s survival, by instrumenting key aspects in winning the civil war. To conclude, it is possible to think that Lenin was unimportant in enabling the communist to survive the war and rebellion.Show MoreRelatedThe First And Hardest Part Of Writing An Essay923 Words à |à 4 Pages The first and hardest part of writing an essay is figuring out how to start. Significant Role of Internship-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp.com
Question: Write a reflection on the Value of your Placement in helping to Prepare you as a New Professional in your Chosen Field. Answer: Introduction The report talks about the perks of doing an internship which is quite motivating and helpful for further development. It also explains that how internship plays a significant role in future professional success. Internship This had been my greatest achievement to work as an intern. The day I thought of doing the internship I was unaware of the path it will lead me to. The thought came to my mind randomly and decided not to let it go, rather there should be the optimum use of it. The idea of internship has not only given me ample of knowledge in different fields but also made me ready to compete with the outer world on a professional level. The day I started doing my job I was not sure if I would be able to make it as per the needs of companys expectation or not, but the kind of environment I got made it easier for me to work (Pattberg, 2012). The knowledge I acquired during the internship was not only limited for a particular time but also helped me towards my future goals. The job I was positioned under was of Front Office Assistant. At this position i had to tackle with the guests behavior and making their profiles, answering calls over phone managing the paper work, making a new reservation and canc eling the unnecessary. So my job was not that easy but obvious, heights are achieved not through short cuts (Kolb, 2014). I worked as an intern in Comfort Inn Bel Eyer Hotel Perth and my job was to attend all type of guests, to be attentive towards work of all sorts. Most importantly the qualities needed to work possessed patience, humbleness, politeness, and ability to work in a disciplined manner, which was inculcated in me already. While working I gained so much, as the work assigned to me was always carried in a professional manner by me. Hence, it led me with greater job perspectives as the work taught me to be professional in approach (Galster Hill, 2012). Coming to professional aspect, since the beginning I had a huge interest in the field of mass media (i.e.) journalism where you have to deal with others and handle the areas of jobs where you have been assigned, therefore I chose to intern in this category which helped me knowing behaviors of people and to be true to work. The internship taught me to be in discipline, be honest towards work and give a fruitful output as expected. The work done should put the mark and should be such that it encourages you to dig more and more. This internship has not only helped me build my status but also increased my efficiency to work more and more as I was made to stay for long hours when the hotel had a huge massive gathering, which is what mainly needed to complete my profile as a professional. It has transformed my abilities and showcased my passion to do work. The major influence through this internship is shown on my career prospects as what a company these days strive for is an experience. T his has not only made our involvement into professionalism but also allowed us to put our first step towards finance. The perks I got in return were quite motivating which continued my interest in work (Darling-Hammond, 2012). On contrary, I think that what I lacked while working on this internship is marketing. I have an interest in marketing therefore in marketing more and more success requires. The strategies planned under this makes one creative and highlights the thinking capacity of an individual. Moreover, in todays era, the market is flourishing with a great speed because of extra ordinary people. Hence, for success in professionalism, one needs to think out of the box and create his own path by achieving more and more. Marketing these days is acquiring 70% of the human population as it has got money and fame, so to achieve it I would say my plan is to work under the supervision of someone who can embrace me with such ideas. Also, when it comes to web designing, I would say it is a larger platform for those who wish to develop their career in IT sector. This is the top trending sector mainly which interests youngsters to enroll themselves in making the world a technological place to live in. I woul d intend on this particular matter as well because I have been studying computer informative since past 2 years and more and in no mood to slip it. I know how to design a website, I know how to create forms, and I am also a programmer but I was not asked to do this. Therefore, after knowing so much about this I have no plans to let it go otherwise. So as per the 12 months are concerned I will practice all these areas under guidance, as leaving them will lessen the chances of success in future (Bernardo, Landicho Laguador, 2014). Conclusion: The idea of doing internship gave me immense powers to acknowledge my work within the professional skills keeping in mind the criteria and functions. I incurred a lot of knowledge and work experience which developed my interest in different fields. It has embodied me to compete with challenges. References: Bernardo, A. Annotations for Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand Essay The Preface describes just how famous Seabiscuit was back around 1938. Our generation has grown up in an age where horse races are not famous, but rather football and baseball games, rock stars, and political figures are. Seabiscuit had trains that were ââ¬Å"Seabiscuit Limitedâ⬠and there was even Seabiscuit revenue that sold like crazy. He moves to San Francisco, California, with barely any money, and starts a bike repair shop. In San Francisco, the ââ¬Å"horse-lessâ⬠carriage arose which many were afraid of. Howard saw opportunity. He created an automobile repair shop. He then traveled to Detroit and met with the Will Durant, chief of Buick Automobiles, whom then hired Howard. On April 18, 1906, there was an earthquake in San Francisco. The horse carriages could not take the firefighters in the fire to save the injured and homeless people or to get rid of the dead. Howard let them use the three cars he had, which in turn worked and showed automobilesââ¬â¢ superiority. He had started a revelation. Howard then started doing daring stunts and races to promote a carââ¬â¢s durability. He was all over the press; whether in heroic stories of him winning a race or an ad for Buickââ¬â¢s, he had the limelight. In 1926, a rich, successful Howard took his wife out to Del Monte, and left their 15-year-old son, Frankie, at home. When they were gone, tragedy struck. Frankie had taken the car out with some friends to go fishing. On their way home, they were driving on a canyon road and saw a large rock, which he swerved to avoid. The car went down over the edge. Frankieââ¬â¢s spine and skull crushed, he was dead. Howard was devastated; he never quite got over it. In the 1920ââ¬â¢s, if a man wanted to sin, California was not the place to be. So instead they traveled to Tijuana which was a town to go when you wanted to sin. There was alcohol, gambling, dancing, and cavorting all over the town. There, the Tijuana Racecourse was built; many called it ugly but had the first movable gates and photo finishes. Here Howard would sometimes travel. Charlesââ¬â¢ son was married to Anita, who was pregnant. During her pregnancy, she asked her sister Marcela to come and stay with them. While she was there, she and Charles fell in love. Only a few more horses clopped down the streets in San Francisco, cars were the main attraction. Charles was rich, but bored, so he moved on to horseracing. Former pro baseball player Charles Strub lost everything in the stock market, he decided to build a racetrack and bring racing back to California. Only two conditions racing become legal again. One, tracks had to use the pari-mutuel wagering machine instead of the bookmakers. Two, wagering would be heavily taxed. Charles Howard went on the look for the best trainer. Connections- The town of Tijuana reminds me of Las Vegas, which is also known as Sin City. Both towns have many things that are frowned upon and when you go, you come back like it never happened.

Values Important in My Life Essays - Identity Management, Law
Values Important in My Life Essays - Identity Management, Law Values Important in My Life Hiral Patel MGT 111*BC Professor McMillin 10/19/2012 Personal values are referred to as the defining principles in a person as an individual. These principles help determine how a person will face the world and relate with people as required. Personal values are a conviction concerning what a person believes is vital and desirable in his or her life. To me, a value is known to be a belief, or a philosophy, which is useful or can be useful in the future. My culture, environment, background, and family instill my values and ethics. There are many values that are important and that define my existence: family, independence, wisdom, education, progress and change, privacy, friendship, love, helping others, and achievement and success. I have grown up understanding the importance of family and relationships. I have been taught that your family are one of the only few people in the world who will be by your side and support you at all times. My family members are basically my advisors who teach me the right and wrong in life. My mother would always say, "If a family is and stays together, there is a solution for everything." I have always believed that keeping relationships with my family members is quite important because not only do they guide me through life, but they also help me with all kinds of dilemmas. Independence is prominent because I live according to my principles and I make my own decisions. It is my freedom and a chance to choose my way and my belief, which I am able to follow without it being prosecuted. Independence is having the right to agree, to disagree, and to have an education regardless of my race or gender or where I was born. It is my ability to choose. It is fine if I make mistakes because that is the only way I will learn. I will trip, and get back up and try again. Wisdom helps express my individuality. It is the light that guides my life and allows me to see the truth and not be blinded by others. With wisdom, I have the ability to se e beneath the surface of things, and I have the ability to make the best, informed decisions at any given time. If I use my wisdom when I am in a problem, I realize that I have solved many problems similar to the one I am in right now. Wisdom then assists me in getting rid of my problem. Wisdom prevents me from making and committing unethical decisions and actions. Education is a form of gaining knowledge of the world around me. It helps me build opinions and have points of view on aspects in life. Education is not just about lessons in textbooks, but about lessons of life, as well. It brings up questions and also helps me devise ways to find satisfactory answers to them. Also, I have grown up understanding the importance of education and how it opens doors to brilliant career opportunities. Every employer today requires expertise and employees to be well educated. Thus , education becomes an eligibility criterion for employment in any sector of the industry. Progress and change are both necessary in having and leading a successful life. Without them, I would just remain where I am forever. Progress is necessary in every aspect of life, as the world seems to be continuously changing all of the time. It does not have to be a major leap because small steps add up with time. Changes in life are inevitable. They make life more challenging for me because life without challenges is boring. It is better to try, experience, and accept new things. For me, privacy is necessary to protect my interests in certain situations. I do not consider privacy important due to embarrassment in front o f people, but rather because I personally l ike aspects of my life to be private. Yes, I would reveal things to a few people such as my family members, but other than that, I take privacy seriously. To me, it is the only way to be safe and avoid any kind of trouble. Having

P&G Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
P&G - Case Study Example where the brightest minds have gathered together over the decades to come up with new products that customers would be happy to use on a regular basis, thus providing strength to the bottom line financially. Over ten years ago, P & G realized that market growth was expanding very rapidly, but that there was a slight decline in P & G sales, and innovation projects were only meeting 15 percent in success targets. This presented a challenge that many companies were facing at that time: how to keep up, move forward, and develop a larger range of fresh innovation which would help drive both the top and bottom growth line (Innosight web: Addison web). The P & G research and development (R & D) group consisted of 8,000 internal researchers situated in laboratories across the globe, in 26 facilities, and it was determined that the company had to find a way to make innovation processes, systematic, repeatable and reliable (Innosight web). Solving the Problem of Innovation and Development. It was decided, at this point, to move research and innovation out to the public level, including the customer view as to what they wanted to see on the market that they would purchase (Innosight web). In essence, this was a case of including the public into its hallowed halls of research and development innovation, in order to move beyond the previous insular situation of researchers who were constantly trying to come up with new ideas. Including the public into this new program, called ââ¬Å"Connect & Developâ⬠, opened many doors for the company innovation program, the researchers involved who helped clients/customers to bring dreams and innovative ideas to life, and provided a much larger, ongoing influx of new ideas and products (Addison web). Compare and Contrast images of L.A Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Compare and Contrast images of L.A - Essay Example Ponceââ¬â¢s use of imagery and description in the text makes you feel like you are actually right there with her watching Roy Rogers and Cassidy movies on Sundays. Her joyful tone makes it seem as if life in those days was much easier and less demanding than it is today in our global rat race. In those days, the people would look forward to Father Muellerââ¬â¢s western movies after rosary; it would create a break from monotony and encourage socialization. Today, Iââ¬â¢m sure, a teenager would not be caught dead at a social organized by the church, and instead they prefer going to the theatres/movies (which are now extremely affordable), the discos and other places where ââ¬Å"occasions of sinâ⬠are very likely to happen. Her word choice is superb; especially the mixture of Spanish and English when relaying a conversation shows the Spaniards character: hot, bubbly and dramatic. The tone of the text gives the reader a sense of excitement and a want to read more, to see w hat is going to happen next. You almost feel as if you want to go back to that day and age and live the authorââ¬â¢s life. In almost all aspects, both authors write in the same manner, but of different things. The author also shows the cheekiness of a teenage girl when she speaks of her loyalty to the older ladies for whom she translates the films: ââ¬Å"At times the movies were too long, the plot too predictable. I would tire of my job and yearn to sit in front with Elena. By now I had spent the money given me by Dona Luisa and the Trinidads. As the show dragged on, I fidgeted in my seat, edging toward Elena. Once I had collected mas cincos, I sought ways to escape from the boring job of translating an old cowboy movie. One usually workedâ⬠¦ (pg. 805, p. 5). I remained unruffled, my fist tight around the nickels I had earned, as I pushed my way toward Elena. Around me the thoroughly confused women sat in wonder at this sudden turn of events. They squabbled, each wanting to believe only what they had seen on the white screen, until told to ââ¬Å"hushâ⬠by those sitting in backâ⬠¦. (pg. 806, p. 3). At times I felt guilty about the translation and the nickels, especially when the senoras began to bicker among themselves. My guilt would last until the following Sunday, when once more I might recite an original version of an old western. (pg. 807)â⬠In this respect, we see how children and teenagers have not really evolved much throughout the years, the feelings, the attitudes and the actions are still very much the same. Sure, today one does not have to translate a movie, but it can be seen at events where a teenager who shows up with his/her parents will stay with them only until they can find their friend and soon they are off. There is also still what one might call a ââ¬Å"great divideâ⬠between the popular kids and the not so popular kids: ââ¬Å"When she saw me changing my dress for las vistas, Trina would just snicker. ââ¬Å"I wouldnââ¬â¢t be caught at them old movies. Itââ¬â¢s not hip!â⬠ââ¬Å"I like em.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s cause youââ¬â¢re a square.â⬠She tossed back her pageboy, arched her eyebrows (just like Joan Crawford), and then locked herself in the
